Press Release - 16th Oct 2025

The National Trust and the Bembridge Fort Trust are pleased to announce that they have agreed a long-term lease for the Palmerston era Bembridge Fort, located on Culver Down on the Isle of Wight.

As part of an ambitious conservation and community development program, in partnership with other heritage organisations, Bembridge Fort Trust will now seek to develop the fort as one of the Island’s major attractions, and a venue for a wide range of public events and community activities.

80th Anniversary of D-Day

As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, it is essential to honour not only the bravery of the soldiers who stormed the beaches but also the crucial, often unsung roles played by places like Bembridge Fort and the brave people stationed there.

During World War II, Bembridge Fort was one of Great Britain's most secretive and pivotal locations. Nestled on the dramatic chalk cliffs of Culver Down, this Palmerston-era fort transformed into a hub of wartime innovation. It became a key site for the development of radar technology, loop detection systems, hydrophones, and remote minefield systems—technologies that were instrumental in the success of Allied operations.

About Bembridge Fort and Downs

Bembridge and Culver Downs form a dramatic point at the east end of the Isle of Wight. The cliffs are part of the same chalk ridge that forms the Needles and cliffs of Tennyson Down in the west.

Feel the wind in your hair and admire the views over Sandown Bay and the Solent from this high point perched on top of the cliffs. There is also over a mile of sandy and rocky beach accessible from Sandown with the red and white cliffs behind you.
